[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts review of Storybook Theatre’s Little Red Riding Hood at Theatre West.

The wonderful Theatre West, the oldest continually running professional theatre company in Los Angeles, is celebrating its 60th season.  Perhaps they have discovered the secret to longevity….enchanting patrons at an early age!

Storybook Theatre is an absolutely wonderful children’s theatre company. The actors are engaging and absolutely hilarious. But they also have perfected the knack of grabbing a child’s attention in the most understated and gentle way. When I saw the production was bucketing down, I really thought I would be the only audience member as I sloshed my way across the street, with no umbrella! But low and behold, the theatre was totally packed.

Every child was entertained and every parent was thrilled to share theatre with them and be out of the house and out of the rain. But what better way to spend a rainy Saturday than in the warm arms of Theatre West and Storybook Theatre?

Little Red Riding Hood might seem a bit gruesome for little kids, but when the huntsman asked what should be done about his naughtiness, the kids all wanted blood. Fortunately, none was to be found.  The wolf was repentant and granny was miraculously saved! It never ceases to amaze me how brutal kids can be! Let’s hope it’s all because it’s make believe and not because they are all plotting to take over the world!

Little Red Riding Hood is chock full of lovely songs, lots of audience participation and fun, and a break for juice and cookies in the lobby.  The actors really are excellent, perfect for children – sweet, funny and totally unfazed by anything shouted out from the mesmerized children and adults alike, which, of course, all adds to the fun!

Little Red Riding Hood has closed, but their next production is Hansel and Gretel which opens on February 18 and runs through June 3. Sso you will have plenty of time to collect your kids or grandkids and make them lifelong theatre lovers!

Next Show:

Hansel and Gretel

Hansel and Gretel is Storybook Theatre’s award-winning musical retelling of the famous fairy tale.  The popular musical about the brother and sister who leave home and follow bread crumbs through the theatre, meet a funny witch, a wacky bird, have all kinds of adventures and along the way learn that no matter what trouble you are in, it’s never a good idea to run away.  It’s a happy, fun show, inspired by the beloved story from the Brothers Grimm.
