Come by and enjoy a month of STEAM-Y Día for kids at the North Hollywood Amelia Earhart Library!
El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day), more commonly known as Día, is a year-long celebration of children and reading that culminates on April 30th. Día, also an acronym for Diversity In Action, is an American Library Association initiative to emphasize literacy from all cultures for families of all cultures. This is the twentieth anniversary of Día, and we’ll be celebrating in ‘STEAM-Y’ style here at the NoHo Library.
This year, Día is highlighting diversity in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Mathematics) subjects. STEAM based learning and higher proficiency in these subjects for students across America, has been a prerogative with educators in the last couple of decades. Libraries help in this arena by introducing creative and informal learning environments with STEAM topics for children and teens of all ages. Which is why we’ve got a whole month’s worth of STEAM-Y fun for kids at the NoHo Library!
·On our third “Wonderful Wednesday” of the month, April 19th, we will be presenting a STEAM program called “Blast Off Into Space.”
Join us at 3:30 for space themed crafts and fun. Great for families of all ages!
· Every Sunday during our opening hours of 1-5, we’ve got an Art Cart we roll out that has a special Sunday craft along with free supplies. For our STEAM-Y month of Día, we’ve got STEAM related crafts to make and bring home, including “Balancing a Butterfly with Pennies”, and “Straw Blowing Rockets”!
·Out for our month-long children’s activity center, we’ll be hosting a mini fossil hunt. Check out our touch and sorting tray of real fossils from the Cretaceous, Jurassic, Triassic, and Devonian Periods. Find all nine types for a chance to enter our raffle and win a prize. You might even find a shark tooth in the mix!
· Our children’s room round table book display will present a huge selection of STEAM-y books written by diverse authors or include multicultural characters. We’ll be putting out books for kids of different ages, all available for checkout.
Join us at the library – we’d love to see you! Our hours are Mon-Thurs 10am-8pm, Fri & Sat 9:30-5:30, & Sun 1-5. Also, follow us on our social media accounts – look for NoHo Library on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Here’s to celebrating Día!
