LeeSun “Singing You This Song”

LeeSun is the kind of quirky, totally unique singer-songwriter that is hard to ignore.

Her intricately crafted, timeless songs with haunting guitars, soft percussion and lovely heartfelt rhythms grow more and more compelling with every listen, and believe me, you will want to play them over and over and over.

How this Korean Canadian ended up in Leeds in the North of England is just part of her mystery.  But the sweet vulnerability and candid charm of her songs don’t seem out of place anywhere.  Her songs are reminiscent of the very best of Nora Jones or Fiest, or maybe even Bijork.  She ruminates on pain and love and growth and power and despair as a poet might, but with warm rhythms and sultry harmonies that bely the darkness of their origins.

LeeSun has created something beautiful.

Her soft, haunting voice so simple and so honest breaks your heart a little as she smilingly sings.  I confess that I cannot stop playing this album.  It’s clever and romantic, completely open and full of memories that resonate with us all…painful and sad and wonderful.

It feels like it’s recorded in her home, in someone’s home, in our home.  It’s intimate in a deeply spiritual way that many artists strive for but can never accomplish because they won’t let go and risk us not getting that truth is better than overly complicated.

The production is gorgeously open and warm and resonant.  There’s enough space here to feel like you are actually in the room with her as she sings.  I wish I was!

This might be the best Christmas gift you give this year. Do yourself a huge favor and make it one you give yourself at the very least.

Favorite track? It’s hard to pick, but right now it’s, “We’re All Made of Stars.” But honestly that could change. They are all brilliant.  Love, love, love this album.
