Lara Taubman has returned to music after a lifetime of doing other things.
She, like all of us with a deep burn to create has found herself unable to do anything else in the end. The result of all this is a sweetly simple album, full of songs about love, loss, getting older and somewhat wiser, all told with humor and an absolutely gorgeous voice and a seemingly effortless grace. There’s a certainly quality to her voice that makes you totally sure she is singing her own story. A clarity of tone, a strength of phrasing and a timelessness that feels altogether ageless, but also rather modern and real.
I can hear Cohen and Joni Mitchell, Patty Smith and KD Lang. American poets with earnest soulful songs. Songs that can save us, lead us to love and to hidden parts of ourselves. Lara Taubman has this same innate ability. Guided by the clear, gentle brilliance of Hugh Christopher Brown, Wolf Island Records.
Over the years I have been able to listen to artists at various stages of their art, their life and their musical development. It’s such a treat to find a women with something really interesting to say about the world who’s around the same age as myself, for at our moment in life we surely have an awful lot to say. Lara Taubman says her peace with a sweetly mournful voice, a truly beautiful way of showing us her breaking, the kind of breaking where the clouds tear to let the sunlight through after a storm.
I love this album. It’s folksy Americana, bluesy outlaw music, sometimes with a little twist of classic rock. My absolute favorite track is Akureyri….because it reminds me of my misspent youth as a sailor and the many broken hearts that came of it. But really every song is lovely and so clearly pulled from her heart… “Revelation” truly is a gift to us all.
