Groundwork Coffee Co. Pulls into NoHo!

Revitalizing a Los Angeles Historic Landmark Building, Groundwork Coffee Co. Opens New Café in North Hollywood Historic Train Depot

Welcome to NoHo, Groundwork Coffee Co.!

Groundwork Coffee Co., the USDA certified organic roasting company founded in Venice Beach, California in 1990 and Los Angeles’ largest organic coffee roaster, has just opened a new café in the beautifully restored North Hollywood Historic Train Depot in the neighborhood’s thriving Arts District.

The new Groundwork café is built into the North Hollywood Historic Train Depot as part of the restoration of this registered State Historic Landmark Building. The café’s concept and design are a return to the form and function of yesteryear. Reclaimed wood, repurposed light fixtures, marble, brass, and other natural elements are used to help bring the depot back to life. A window that once provided access to a ticket booth will now allow commuters to grab coffee and baked goods on the go. A room where commuters used to wait for a train will now be part of the indoor/outdoor seating area for dining.

General Contractor Wade Robinson specializes in the restoration of older buildings, as evidenced by his award-winning work on North Hollywood’s Idle Hour café. His attention to detail and commitment to craftsmanship and authentic material have resulted in a re-creation of an old space with new purpose.

Café service includes brewed coffee, roasted only three blocks away at Groundwork’s North Hollywood roastery, and espresso drinks prepared by skilled baristas. In addition, the café offers Groundwork’s full delicious made-to-order food menu, prepared fresh in the on-site kitchen. They also offer an array of house-made baked goods prepared daily at Groundwork’s Venice Beach bakery.

Built in the early 1890s, the North Hollywood Train Depot is located at the intersection of the Red Line and Orange Bus Line — two of the city’s most-traveled public transportation routes. It was the historic hub of the North Hollywood neighborhood for more than 100 years. The building is owned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (METRO) and has been seismically upgraded, fully repaired and restored, with the additions of the Groundwork Coffee Co. café, a bicycle repair and accessories shop, and plenty of bike parking for the growing cycling commuter community. It is a warm, welcoming venue where residents and commuters can enjoy one of life’s simple pleasures: a delicious cup of coffee and good company.

Groundwork Coffee Co. at The North Hollywood Historic Train Depot is located at 11275 Chandler Blvd., North Hollywood, CA 91601.

About Groundwork Coffee Co.

For 27 years, Groundwork has been a homegrown coffee and tea destination, handcrafting the best beverages with the finest ingredients. Their borderline-obsessive commitment to each cup and every customer – in warm, inviting cafés that capture the flavor of their neighborhoods – is fundamental to their business. Groundwork rose from the sands of Venice Beach, CA as a rare and used bookstore that also sold coffee and tea, but as local demand grew they got out of the book business to roast full time. They were one of the first certified organic coffee roasters in California, are the largest organic coffee roaster in Los Angeles, and their sustainable relationship-based, organic coffee sourcing has set the industry standard, as well as their solar-powered, low-emissions roasting technology. Today, Groundwork operates eight café locations throughout the Los Angeles area, distributes its coffees to more than 900 food service and grocery customers across the U.S., as well as a new roastery and cafés in Portland, Oregon to bring their mission and coffee to the Pacific Northwest.
