Wow…I have been considering how to describe Avery Volk’s quite brilliant show, Girl in Reverse: A Feminine Rage Manifesto, and honestly, and this never happens, I find myself a little at a loss for words.
Avery is one of those spectacular performers that you cannot tear your gaze from. There’s something about her. She’s exquisite in that ancient goddess with a switchblade kind of way. She’s brutal with her beauty but the most compelling thing about this show is not her looks, it’s her mind. What a mind she has.
The twists and turns of this hilarious, bawdy, gorgeously, profane and heartbreakingly honest show are equaled only by Avery’s ability to make you believe every single second of everything she says.
It’s all about her of course, most solo show are. But she is so fascinating and has such a unique, quirky and mind-bendingly delicious lens that you kind of wish her story would never end. The show is about her romantic and not-so-romantic trysts and almost trysts and the fragmentation caused. It expands on her journey through love and beyond and it’s so funny and true and achingly endearing that you want to put her in your pocket and take her home. Perhaps that sounds creepy. But I don’t care.
She’s the best friend you wish you had and her beautifully written and brilliantly paced exploration of her world is absolutely one of the best solo shows I have seen…and I’ve seen a lot.
