Never has a song about the open road and how deep the human need for change is rung so true. “Keep on Driving” is a sublimely simple melodious American rock song.
The Canadian singer songwriter Geoff Gibbons has a knack writing beautiful poignant lyrics. I reviewed his track “Fall Girl” a while back, another gorgeous cinematic classic.
“Got to find an open road, gotta keep on driving” oh how I would love to. The song is basically about getting out of the city and deep deep into the countryside to save yourself, your sanity. It’s something we can all relate to right now. But although the lyric is beating against the machine of life, it’s far from cynical or hopeless. In fact with the lovely billowy mix, the comforting twang of the slide guitar and the rhythm of the heart and road the song pulls us up – up out of our seats and our funk and our current dark hidden defensive existence and shows us another way.
Geoff’s vocal is sweet and gentle and totally relatable. The song forms around him like a misty blanket. Building gently as it unfolds. Nothing forced, nothing contrived, nothing too predictable. Just honesty and hope. I absolutely love this song. All I need now is a pickup truck, a tank full of gas and no particular place to go…bliss!!
