Game of Thrones has already conquered the world of television, and now it could be set to do the same on the stage. Game of Thrones: The Mad King recently premiered at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, and it will be making its way to London in 2027.
The show, adapted by Duncan Macmillan and directed by Dominic Cooke, focuses on the legendary Tourney at Harrenhal, which was the catalyst for the events that followed in Game of Thrones.

The new Game of Thrones play covers a period in Westeros history that was central to the events of the main series despite happening many years before the HBO offering’s timeline began. The Tourney of Harrenhal that took place during the reign of Aerys II Targaryen featured some of the most important figures from George R. R. Martin’s world, including Prince Rhaegar Targaryen.
The prince famously won the jousting tournament and then shockingly named Lyanna Stark the queen of love and beauty over his wife, Elia Martell. The two ended up eloping together, and it was a factor that led to the war known as Robert’s Rebellion, in which the Mad King was ultimately overthrown.
These events had only been touched on through references and memories in the main series, so the new stage show gives viewers a chance to see them actually playing out for the first time.
Game of Thrones Universe Continues to Expand in New Ways
One of the main reasons why Game of Thrones was so successful was because the franchise expanded way beyond the television series. It has never been afraid to branch out in fresh and exciting ways, and the stage show is just the latest example of that.
