The H.E.ART Performing Arts Academy Presents the Fosse® Master Class, Saturday, March 14.
The NoHo Arts District is a dance district. With six studios and more opening their doors, we are going to have dance legends come through to teachg master classes that give us dance history and help us maintain our rich dance traditions.
The H.E.ART (Heartfelt Education through the ARTs) Performing Arts Academy, located at NoHo’s very own MKM Cultural Arts Center, is proving to be a real asset to our artistic community bringing not only their own program, teaching Triple.Threat (Vocal/Acting/Dance) classes to students from 5 years olod through to adults but also bringing some exciting events into our neighbourhood. Having just presented their “A Lesson In Blackness” to a capacity crowd in the MKM Theater just last week, they are now presenting a legendary MasterClass series, beginning this Saturday.
The first in their series is a masterclass covering the choreography of dance icon Bob Fosse, known for his signature jazz hands and classic movies like “Sweet Charity,” “Cabaret” and “All That Jazz” along with musicals “Chicago,” “Pippin,” “Liza” and “Dancin’.”
The H.E.ART Founder & Creative Director Eartha Robinson took time out of her busy schedule to share.
“We are so thrilled to be presenting a Fosse® Master Class, in collaboration with the Fosse/Verdon Estate (The Verdon Fosse Legacy), taught by the wonderful Valarie Pettiford and Lloyd Culbreath, friends of mine since my New York days back at the Performing Arts School and on Broadway! Valerie and Lloyd are both veteran Fosse dancer. Valarie received a Tony nom. for her role in the Broadway production “Fosse” and an NAACP Theatre Award for her lead role in “The Wild Party.” She also has manyfilm and T.V. credits. Lloyd is currently the lead instructor for the Fosse Master Class Series and like Valarie, has many Broadway credits, including ”Dancin’,” “Sophisticated Ladies,” “The Tap Dance Kid,” etc. These two are the real deal and, of course, Fosse and Gwen Verdon changed the landscape of choreography in both theatre and film and remain a huge influence on all of us dancers and choreographers to this day. An influence that will surely continue well into the future. I thought this would be a wonderful opportunity to give serious dancers in our Los Angeles dance community the chance to gain some historic knowledge from those who were taught by the Master himself, so it will be a fantastic, spirited afternoon for us all!”
One thing is certain, with the infectious enthusiasm that Eartha brings to her projects, this will be one afternoon that will be remembered, by those choosing to participate, for quite some time!!
