[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts theatre review of Fill Your Hole, written and performed by David Jahn as part of Whitefire Theatre’s Solofest 2026.
David Jahn’s solo show, Fill Your Hole, is a remarkable and stirringly intimate show. The charm and talent of Mr. Jahn are so effective and powerful that he had me at “Hello.” Personally speaking, this show came at a pivotal time not only of my day, but probably for the whole of last year. In order to do justice to this show, I find myself at odds with myself. As an audience member and reviewer, I was riveted to the very movement and utterance that came from Mr. Jahn’s mouth. But, as a human being, it was as if I was listening to a dear and wise friend who told me just enough to get me back up on my feet. Thank you, David Jahn.
The stage was pretty much bare, so there was no furniture or props to distract the audience from the message of this show. The phrase that served as the log line, “We’re all born with a God-shaped hole and we seem to fill that hole with anything but God.” Amen, brother. In this show, there were no holes. But the theatre was filled with wit, humour, charm, laughter, and tears. David Jahn’s message was loud and clear and very much needed for our current times, or frankly, any time.
David Jahn’s journey of chasing a relationship across the country is an every person’s journey. The relationship between Jahn and the audience was easy, tender, and kind. His self-discovery felt like my self-discovery. I just didn’t have a phrase or solo show to recognize it. The audience was on his side from beginning to end. Talent such as this reminds me of the idea of a true performer; acting, writing, dancing, and engaging still exist and are in good standing.
I must mention the direction by John Sgueglia, who kept the show simple and fast-paced. I suspect that this show, the performer, and the message will stay with me for a long time. Do yourself and your hole’s favor and try to catch this show when and wherever you can.
