[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts theatre review of Force of Nature Productions’ Figments, written by Thomas J. Misuraca, directed by Corey Chappell, with original Music by Tricia Minty, running through November 18 at Brickhouse Theatre.
Figments is the kind of comedic yet deadly serious psychological story that works brilliantly in the intimate space of the Brickhouse Theatre in NoHo.
The very clever folks at Force of Nature Productions are prolific to say the least, but this never seems to affect the quality of their work. In many ways it might inspire them even more, energizing the actors and the writers with the knowledge that their work will be produced, supported and, most importantly, seen.
Figments is a tense deep look into the mind of a writer, forced to retreat to a cabin in the winter months in order to finally finish his novel. He is accompanied by his cruelly critical mother, followed by his best friend, an annoyingly far more successful novelist, and then seduced by his neighbor, who embodies all he longs for in a woman.
But as the play unfolds, we discover that some or perhaps all of these characters are only in his head. ‘Figments’ of his imagination in fact. And the task he has set is to determine who is real and who is not. As an audience member, it is not at all obvious either and the play becomes more Agatha Christie meets 12 Monkeys as the writer at the center of the story’s mind continues to unravel.
It’s a fun ride! The performances are all really excellent and we are drawn into the drama by the expert writing and direction from the outset. Figments has a very authentic vibe for a play about a fragmented mind.
The characters…even the imaginary ones… are fully realized, compelling and truthful, which increases all the possibilities in a delightfully exponential way. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it. I love the Brickhouse Theatre. Small and sweet, nestled into the neighborhood with a lovely vintage atmosphere, like a model train station. I’ve seen some wonderful shows there and Figments is another…only on for a few more weeks though, so don’t dawdle. Support our NoHo theatres!!!!
