[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts theatre review of Write Act Rep’s EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN, five world premiere original one-act plays as part of the annual Hot Summer Nights – The Musical Series (2025), running July 19-August 9.

Write Act Rep is a bit of a NoHo institution! They’ve been around for a long time and are a perfect fit for the cosy, warm and welcoming Brickhouse Theatre. This year, they continue their annual musical theatre festival of shorts with Everything Under the Sun.

I love a good musical and these five brand new musical shorts are a brilliant mix of themes and styles, stories and voices.

Seeing something raw and at its very beginning is a big thrill for this busy theatre writer. Although I don’t want you to think that these plays are anything but fully complete. But they are new. Which is wonderful, and many of these actors are truly originating these roles, which must also be a big thrill for them!

And what a wonderful collection of actors with spectacularly  authentic voices for Everything Under the Sun. Perfect for musical theatre, which usually demands only that actors stay in character, stay in key, and be fascinating and unique. Many of these fine actors are also fine singers, and it’s a lot of fun watching them all navigate these wildly disparate stories.

With stories as varied as friends throwing a party for the literal end of the world, to a daughter coping with her mother’s dementia, strangers auditioning for a reality show, a small community humorously trapped in an actual musical and an eviction that becomes an unexpected friendship. All the stories are populated with funny, interesting and very well-written characters.

Some actors are in several plays and that is particularly brilliant. It makes it feel like a little festival, a chance to see work created and performed by a company of actors, all supporting and inspiring each other. The result of all this good energy is an evening of storytelling enhanced by rousing songs and excellent performances. You can also see that these lovely actors are having a ridiculously enormous amount fun, and it’s infectious!!
