The 36th installment of New Musicals Inc. Artistic Director Elise Dewsberry’s video blog, How to Get NO Feedback from Elise, is part of a short series giving you an ASSIGNMENT for your current musical. Assignment #6 is: PRONOUNS.
In this episode, Elise Dewsberry asks musical theatre writers to examine the pronouns throughout their scripts and consider what those choices reveal about clarity, character relationships and storytelling. She encourages writers to look closely at who is speaking, who is being referred to and whether words like he, she, they, we, and you always make the meaning clear to an audience hearing the material for the first time. Through this month’s assignment, Elise challenges creators to catch moments where pronouns may create confusion and make sure every reference helps the audience follow the story without having to stop and figure out who is who.
