Go See “Dreamgirls” at Cupcake Theatre

Don’t bother flying to New York to see a Broadway Show….Go see “Dreamgirls” at Cupcake Theatre. I seldom write a review but this musical was truly remarkable.

It was a magnificent Motown musical.  The entire audience was dancing in their seats. The musical was directed and choreographed by Tor Campbell who deserves a hundred accolades. Bravo!! The show has an amazing 30-member cast with most of the members triple threats. Every one of them was spectacular.  I originally saw “Dreamgirls” on Broadway years ago, but the vocals in this NoHo show truly out shined the NY “Dreamgirls” cast.  There are about 15 very well-trained dancers in the chorus whose wonderful energy illuminated the show.  The cast of many musicals often cannot give the best acting performances, but to my surprise, these talented singers and dancers were also just as talented in the acting department.  I am not surprised that this production is up for the NAACP Awards and is the highest rated musical in Los Angeles on Goldstar.

I must pay tribute to Cupcake Theatre’s artistic director and producer of “Dreamgirls” – Michael Pettenato.   Putting on a large Broadway show in a 175-seat house is almost impossible but Michael consistently produces these large-scale Broadway musicals.  He has his hand in every aspect of mounting these shows.  I have never met anyone that is more talented in producing musicals.  I can’t imagine the masterpiece he could do with his own original musical.

Don’t miss this show…a guaranteed exciting evening of pure entertainment.

Dreamgirls runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through September 30 at the Cupcake Theater, 11020 Magnolia Blvd., North Hollywood.
