I am always amazed how Cupcake Theatre’s artistic director Michael Pettenato can pull off such quality, large-scale, book musicals in an under 200-seat house.
It is truly “Broadway – Up Close & Personal.” NoHo/Los Angeles truly has incredible performers and Michael finds them for every musical he produces.
I have seen the musical “Mamma Mia” on Broadway and with at least 20 touring companies and I must say I still had to control myself from dancing in my chair and belting out my favorite Abba songs.
The entire audience rose for a standing ovation and truly didn’t want the cast to leave the stage.
Donna, the spirited mom played by Erin Eichberg, performed every song with deep emotion and put Meryl Streep’s performance in the movie version to shame….that woman can sing! Sofie, Donna’s daughter played by Page Stewart, has a beautiful musical theatre voice. All three dads – Sam, Bill and Harry – were charming and multi-talented. The ensemble rounded out this production with rich and vibrant vocals and some fantastic dancing. Applause to the choreographer, Tor Campbell.
The musical was directed by the strong, steady hand of Michael Pettenato who one day I predict will be producing/directing his original musicals throughout the country and across the sea.
This show can be performed by this same cast at the Ahmanson Theatre or the Pantages Theatre, it is that good a production. Erin Eichberg who plays Donna was magnificent in her staring role and the entire cast was just amazing.
