Corpus Christi, the Best of the Texas Coast

A visit to the Texas State Aquarium is both educational and awe-inspiring.
A visit to the Texas State Aquarium is both educational and awe-inspiring.

Fondly known as the Sparkling City by the Sea, Corpus Christi is one of Texas’ most beautiful seaside locations.

Thanks to Corpus Christi’s subtropical climate, the summers here are long and hot, and the winters brisk, making it the perfect destination, almost all year round, to enjoy a vacation without having to leave the States.

If you’re considering taking a break and heading to Corpus Christi, then here are some of the attractions you should be sure to make a beeline for.

Swim with the Fishes

If you’ve made the most of the plethora of virtual museum tours that have sprung into being lately then chances are you’re ready for a tour around something a little more hands on. The Texas State Aquarium offers some special encounters alongside their traditional tickets, which allow you to get even closer to the marine animals and fish on display. One of the most breathtaking encounters is feeding the fish. Groups of no more than six people are invited behind the scenes at the aquarium to learn more about how these aquatic animals are cared for. During the visit, you’ll be invited to feed endangered and beautiful species. For those who don’t feel the need to get involved with feeding, a standard ticket will afford you access to all of the most exciting exhibits. There’s a real focus on conservation at the Texas State Aquarium, particularly of species native to the Gulf Coast, so it’s both an educational and beneficial trip to plan.

Unleash Your Inner Poker Pro

Just a couple of miles from Corpus Christi is Robstown. Whilst it’s not necessarily worth a stop in itself, it is known as the birthplace of Texas Hold’em poker. Robstown sadly doesn’t have a casino so if you want to play the game about as close as possible to where it was first invented then Corpus Christi is your best bet! Take a little time to familiarize yourself with texas holdem rules and then let your skills loose at the Lucky Stars Casino. This casino is one of the only ones in town with poker tables, at which they hold regular tournaments. So if you’re feeling like your skills are up to the standard you should get involved. For those who are a little less confident in their card-playing there are plenty of slot machines that are easy to play for any ability.

Snoop Around the Selena Museum

For those who enjoy their tourist destinations a little more on the wacky side, the Selena Museum is the answer to your prayers. This museum is dedicated entirely to the singer Selena Quintanilla. This museum has all manner of Selena memorabilia, including tour t-shirts, badges, and ticket stubs, but it also has some priceless collectible items including famous stage outfits and awards. Selena was incredibly famous for her daring wardrobe and as such, there is an entire room dedicated to it. Mannequins stand in glass boxes wearing Selena’s most iconic looks. Further on in the museum is Selena’s famous red Ferrari, as well as larger-than-life images of the star herself. At only $3 for entry, even if you’re not a Selena fan, this museum is worth visiting for the enormity of the collection and the incredible devotion of her fans.
