NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts theatre review of Betsy Cox’s solo show Broke Bitch Got Rich, directed by Lorraine Lopez and produced by Soaring Solo Studios, at the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2025.
What can I tell you about this spectacularly funny show?
Well, Betsy Cox, rich or not, is a hugely talented comedian. She has that special indefinable something so many seek. It’s hard to put into words, but ‘pizzaz’ comes to mind. Is that too old school? Maybe, but Betsy Cox has a style that to me is reminiscent of classic female comedians. Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, Lily Tomlin and Goldie Hawn, they all have that fiercely individual style. Wildly different. Wonderfully wry and with killer observational comedic timing.

Betsy Cox is exactly like that. Cute, strong, extremely funny and smart. Very, very smart. In fact she oozes intelligence as she manoeuvres her way through the story of her crazy life. From poor to rich and everything in between. As she talks us through her journey she peppers every carefully placed anecdote with delightfully spicy judgements and piercing asides, all cunningly camouflaged by her sultry, slow delivery. She is certainly a truly wonderful storyteller. But there’s more to her than that…she feels like a star. In that weird way that some performers do…you can’t really put your finger on why. She just has “it.”
Broke Bitch Got Rich is brilliant storytelling wrapped in a comic solo show. Betsy Cox holds nothing back as she shares her life, her eccentric Louisiana family and her yearning to be free from economic worries. I totally relate! But what could have been just another solo show is far from it. Betsy Cox is riveting to watch, charismatic and a genuine talent. Her story is funny and endearing and brazen, but it also reeks of authenticity. How to make money with nothing but your wits and your looks and a need to not have everything end badly. Sheer force of will makes Betsy Cox a star…I am sure of it! Absolutely one of my favorite shows this Hollywood Fringe!
