[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts music review of Bill Godfrey’s “Hypnotized” EP release.
Bill Godfrey has a gorgeous voice. Sweet, soulful, slightly husky and absolutely perfect for the funny, joyful and utterly brilliant five songs on his new EP, “Hypnotized.”
Godfrey uses every tool in his toolbox. A tech wizard, his production is spectacular. The tracks are all written around the themes of control, self discovery, the longing to belong and the not always brilliant consequences of love.
The songs are really wonderful. Insightful, well crafted, purposeful and very very catchy.
The musicianship is also truly excellent. Godfrey has assembled a gifted group and the eclectic nuance of each really makes these songs…sing! The mixes spiraling, rich and unexpected…
My favorite, if I had to choose, would be “Hypnotized,” the title track. Brilliant lyrics, wonderful vocals and a spooky, seasonal vibe…but all these songs are excellent. More than the songs, the sounds he creates with his sonic manipulation elevate these already wonderful tracks. It’s funky, electro-phonic folk music with dark dark humor and a cunning commercial twist. It’s “Wednesday” meets “Sleepy Hollow” meets “Stranger Things.” With liberal helpings of “X-Files,” the really good episodes.
I can’t get enough of “Hypnotized” or maybe I’ve been zapped? Either way, I’m hooked on Bill Godfrey…more, please!
