Ari Stidham Presents “The Edgar Allan Show”

Ari Stidham Presents “The Edgar Allan Show,” Written and Directed by Ari Stidham.

“The Edgar Allan Show” is a rather brilliant and gorgeously funny blend of a deep and serious reverence for the iconic American writer Edgar Allan Poe and utter hilarity.

Ari Stidham is clearly a huge fan of Poe and this show is a loving ode to him, but it’s also done in such a joyous and charmingly silly way, full of epically misplaced dance numbers and songs so awkward and so catchy I dare you not to wiggle in your seats.

A musical about Poe?  I can sense your confusion, but trust me when I tell you that this absolutely works.  Of course, it relies on the total commitment from the performers and these gifted actors.  Kimia Behpoornia, Jordan R. Coleman and Nika H. Mabson are truly “all in.”

Ari takes the poems of Poe, “The Raven,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Fall of the House of Usher” and recites them on stage with the assistance of his lovely cast members.  The brilliance is in their playing it straight and Ari’s complete lack of posturing.

It’s a breathtakingly excellent comedy.  Bold, original, coy, so quick you could blink and miss it kind of comedy.  Subtle in a loud way, so effortless you just know this took a huge amount of crafting.  Yet Ari is far from making fun of Poe, not at all.  He walks that tremulous line between adoration and mocking and does it with style….hugely successfully.  I absolutely loved this show. I rocked with laughter, I was transfixed by the gyrations, the beats and the insanely clever songs.

Halloween is just around the corner and who best to help us celebrate it than the master of dark heartbreak…Edgar would undoubtedly giggle in his foggy grave.
