Curved Seating Spreads Sound Evenly

This is important because human bodies absorb sound, especially higher tones that carry detail. In flat standing areas, people in front can soften the sound for those behind. The elevation also helps by breaking up floor reflections that can muddy sound indoors. You see, flat floors bounce waves back toward listeners. Stepped surfaces scatter those reflections instead. What that means in practice is that the ear receives a clearer main signal.

Open Air Reduces Echo

There is one thing about echoes: they appear when reflections arrive late enough to be heard separately. Indoor arenas with distant walls often create this effect. The problem is, even when echoes are subtle, delayed reflections still smear timing and rhythm.

Amphitheaters handle this differently. Because the surroundings are open, excess sound fades away instead of returning strongly. There are simply fewer large surfaces to send it back.
