[NoHo Arts District, CA]  – AMP Dance LA in the NoHo Arts District is part of a long-running creative space that combines music rehearsal, dance studios, and coffee in one building.

We interviewed AMP Dance LA studio manager Tess about what actually goes on inside the space and why people keep using it. The building includes rehearsal rooms (Amp Rehearsal), dance studios (Amp Dance LA), and an upstairs coffee spot (Amp Coffee LA), so it stays active all day with artists coming in and out. This is not a drop-in class studio. It is a working space. Tess talks about how dancers and musicians share the environment, how people use it for rehearsals, sessions, and projects, and why spaces like this still matter in Los Angeles.

Tell us how AMP Dance LA came to be. What was the original idea behind the studio, and why this space in the NoHo Arts District?

AMP began in 1998 with a love for music, originally serving as a rehearsal space where bands and artists could come together and refine their craft. Over the years, that creative spirit expanded to include coffee and dance, evolving into the vibrant community space it is today.

What’s your role in AMP Dance LA?

My goal is to help uplift AMP Dance LA to its full potential and continue building a space where artists feel inspired, supported, and excited to create.

What’s your background?

I grew up dancing at a small studio and continued dancing recreationally in college on my school’s dance team. Now, I’m bringing that lifelong love for dance into the professional sphere.

How do dancers typically use the space – rehearsals, creation, last-minute prep, weekly classes?

A little bit of everything. Dancers use the space to workshop choreography for classes, rehearse for live performances or concept videos, or simply to session together and exchange energy for fun.

Do you offer set weekly classes?

AMP is primarily a studio rental space. However, many of our clients organize and host their own weekly classes, workshops, or pop-up sessions here.

What should someone know before their first time renting the space? Anything that helps the experience go smoothly?

Always check in at the front desk when you arrive for your rental so we can get you set up and make sure everything runs smoothly.

What’s a small detail about AMP Dance LA that you’re weirdly proud of?

The energy in the building. On any given day, you’ll find dancers, musicians, and creatives all working on different projects, and that shared creative atmosphere is something really special.

What kinds of classes or choreographers do you think would really thrive at AMP Dance LA?

We see a lot of creativity here, so movement-based classes of all kinds tend to thrive, from dance and yoga to artist development and creative workshops.

Is there something coming up or something you’d like readers to know about?

We just did a spotlight on the artist, Natsuki Miya. Be sure to check it out!
