A theatre review of Fuzzy Bottoms Theater Company’s “A Very Fuzzy Christmas” running through December 19 at The Sherry Theater in the NoHo Arts District.
The brutally funny and sometimes just plain brutal, yet adorably profane folks at the Fuzzybottoms Theater Company bring you “A Very Fuzzy Christmas” – a Scrooge-esque Christmas haunting.
It’s everything you might expect from this creative mucky lot and more. Blood splatter, vulgarity, wit, sexy dances and some seriously ingenious 80s rock star impersonations.
I have a penchant for Christmas shows. Flooded with the spirit of the season I love traditional stories full of profundity, warmth and lessons about giving and family and forgiveness. However, ”A Very Fuzzy Christmas” is not exactly that.
Four ghosts haunt four frustrated, bitter whiny characters, bored of lockdown, twisted in their own unique ways. They each in turn get their guides, who aren’t very happy about the encounters either, but needs must when the devil wears a Santa suit!
It’s a riot. Don’t sit in the front couple of rows unless you like to get sticky! There’s lots of gore and some great 80s style dance numbers. The “rock stars” are superb and the stories madcap and ridiculous, but only in the best possible way!
Is it worth braving the pandemic to sit in a dark theatre and watch a group of very dedicated actors entertain in extremely graphic, horrifying, gross and very rude ways? I would say a bloody big yes to that!
The Fuzzybottoms may not be everyones cup of tea. I find them to be brilliant and courageous and unnervingly flamboyant and crass. Which is exactly what they are going for I think. It’s a bit of fun, which we all need so desperately. If you want something safe, then stay home and watch the telly. But if you yearn for human connection and lusty spirited playful and ultimately harmlessly funny entertainment, then this is 100% for you!
So glad to be back in the theatre and laughing out loud while dodging the odd small body part! The show runs through December 19th, so don’t dawdle!
