A Telenovela Christmas Carol at the Archway Theatre
Written by Adam Neubauer & Sebastian Munoz
Directed by Sebastian Munoz
A lighthearted twist on the Dicken’s classic, “A Telenovela Christmas Carol” follows the story of Pedro Azucar, the owner of a Tequila distillery, a miserly, miserable fellow.
After we are introduced to a spectacular array of over the top and dizzyingly interconnected characters in Pedro’s life, Pedro falls asleep. Drunk and alone at his office late at night, the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future all pay their respects…and each one is just as entertaining a trip as the last.
“A Christmas Carol” is such a staple part of our seasonal entertainment, and something I look forward to all year, if I’m honest. So I was a little nervous that this particular ‘twist’ on such a beloved story might be a terrible disaster. But in the capable and ridiculously talented hands of Sebastian Munoz, how could anything be?
From the caroling Mexican chorus entertaining us while we waited for the show to begin to the beautifully colorful set and the wonderful eclectic costumes, each detail was given every attention and finesse. If you have ever actually watched a telenovela you will understand how crucial it is to walk that fine line between passion and ridiculous, drama and debauchery, truth and pure, unadulterated, campy chaos. It’s certainly an art form and Mr Munoz and his hilarious cast manage that fine line with skill and style.
The Archway Theatre is a great setting for any play, I am always amazed at how they push the envelope, and “A Telenovela Christmas Carol” is another successful experiment in substance and style. Every actor is totally committed and all seem to be having tremendous fun with their colossal characters, and the enjoyment is infectious. The whole audience was laughing and whooping and cheering, and what more could any company hope for!?
If you are looking for some fun and a good reason to restock your tequila, then bring your Christmassy ‘spirit’ down to The Archway Theatre Friday and Saturday night at 8pm and Sunday at 2pm from December 2nd to December 18.
