[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts theatre review of J-P Theatre Productions’ A Haunting Revue II, an evening of original sci-fi and horror stories inspired by Rod Serling’s cult classic Night Gallery.
This relentlessly creative production company, J-P Theatre Productions, is back with another wonderful selection of stories, three in total. In an homage to Night Gallery, the stories ponder whether or not we are all alone on this planet. And I don’t mean your pets. Do you believe in ghosts? Are there alien species walking among us? Do we choose to look away when we see people around us who don’t quite look right? Too perfect perhaps, or something about their eyes or their hair or the way they walk, or stand, or stare. Living in L.A., it’s not that unusual to come across people whose skin is too tight or too shiny, but that’s usually just a bad facelift…or is it??

In Birds of a Feather, two brothers and their sister meet at their late mother’s house to go through her belongings. As they sort through the boxes, old resentments resurface, reality unravels a little, and we discover that one of the boys isn’t quite what we assumed…very entertaining!
The Lateness of the Hour, Big Brother organizations have had an enormously positive impact on thousands of boys over the years. It has reshaped lives, given hope where there was none and helped struggling single parents with well-loved children who need positive role models. In a late-night meeting, a young man whose life was turned around by such a man meets him again for the first time in many years. After their reunion, he discovers that the man he just spent several hours reminiscing with had actually passed away hours earlier.
The Fight or Flight Response is yesterday’s take on the supernatural. A quiet yet brilliant man is routinely abused by his boss at an aeronautical company. Even though he is the son of the late owner…or perhaps because of it. He, a newly hired engineer, takes a liking to him and helps him find his confidence; he is emboldened to seek revenge against the dangerous and criminal profiteering organization his father’s company has become. I loved this one!!
Nothing complex, just entertaining, interesting stories about all the weird in the world around us.
All three short plays are original, cerebral and strengthened by some wonderful performances from a group of committed and enthusiastic actors.
If you yearn for stories like these, old Twilight Zone episodes, or Night Gallery, then A Haunting Revue II is for you.
