This is the second time I have had the distinct pleasure of reviewing a Les Techno track.
The first was “Closer Look” last year, which was excellent, and this new song, “Flowers for Dystopia,” is another, although far far different kind of love song. With a nod to the gorgeousness of gloomy 80’s techno pop, the track, with its jangling guitars, driving clap track, fluttering Tamborine and deep melodic base pulls on our heart strings as we sway sublimely.
It’s a cry in the darkness kind of song. Pleading for relief, pining for another and just beautifully produced, masterfully concocted, its musicality an emerging journey like pulling us along with it as it grows. It’s short, a 45 length, no messing around! But I love that. No apologies, no pretense, just groove and rhythm and message…old style New Wave. David Bowie, New Order, Yazoo.
This belongs on a dance floor, or played in a huge festival…if they ever happen again. I can just see the crowds singing along, fists in the air, demanding to be heard and seen, It’s quite the song for where we all find ourself in fact. Lost and alone, begging for connection. The more I listed to the lyrics the more I realize that maybe that is exactly what he sings about.
“Don’t let me go,” “I’m alone with this room with the wizards dressed in their gown and the masks that hide the cruel decisions.” Brilliant stuff. Poignant, prophetic and yearning. He’s a gifted producer and writer, having worked with some of the biggest influencers of the last several decades like Run DMC, Mobb Deep and Ava Cherry and even remixed Red Hot Chili Peppers. This track is the kind of anthemic, pounding, urgent song that we need right now. Something that moves us and fills us and means something without telling us how to feel or pretending to have any answers. I absolutely bloody love “Flowers for Dystopia.” More please!!!!
