VEILS OF THE UNKNOWN Review

Veils of the Unknown at Write Act Repertory's Cringe Festival 2026 official poster

[NoHo Arts District, CA]  – A NoHo Arts theatre review of Write Act Repertory and Artistic Director John Lant’s fourth annual Cringe Festival 2026, VEILS OF THE UNKNOWN, a world premiere series of six one-act plays with special hosts, for a limited October 10 – 25.

The undead are alive, well, and beautifully macabre in  Write Act Rep’s seasonal VEILS OF THE UNKNOWN at The Brickhouse in NoHo!

Write Act Repertory and Producing Artistic Director John Lant have returned with their fourth annual Cringe Festival, and this year’s offering, VEILS OF THE UNKNOWN, is an absolute treat for anyone who loves their drama with a side of the supernatural.

Staged at the cozy Brickhouse Theatre, this world premiere collection of six original one-act plays is a wonderfully spooky tapestry of dread, speculative fiction, and laugh-out-loud psychological horror.

I always search for the heart in whatever play I watch and VEILS OF THE UNKNOWN has a bloody heart in every single one of its creepy, ghoulish vignettes. It takes a village to raise the dead, and this production boasts a massive, fiercely dedicated creative army: five writers, seven directors, and 15 actors, all anchored by a singular, charismatic host (Adam Kroksh) who is adorable in between being many other terrible things.

The entire company of actors and creatives pull back the curtain on the uncanny, pushing the audience to confront the monsters lurking just beyond reality, on stage in front of them and very possibly under their own beds when they get home. And they say good theatre stays with you!

Here’s the lineup of the uncanny, the thought-provoking, and the downright   horrible!

  • FRANK SOUP – A witty, meta-theatrical kick-off where Dr. Frankenstein and Ygor discover the “science of theater.” This one’s a brilliant opener!!!
  • GHOST AND GUILT STORY – A poignant, beautifully acted look at memory and familial haunting. It’s dark but poignant and sweetly sad.
  • THAT CERTAIN GLOW – A charmingly bizarre romance between two jack-o’-lanterns disrupted by a chaotic street cat and ending in the breaking of hearts and gourds
  • INSOMNIA – A tense slow-burn about two sleep-deprived strangers in a clinic whose nightmares intertwine as well as their hearts.
  • JASON FACES SOCIETAL PRESSURE – A brilliant comedy-horror standout featuring a serial killer’s midlife crisis and a therapist dressed as Donald Duck who is so over dramatic life stories!.
  • HONEY, I’M DEAD – A chaotic sitcom-taping finale involving a vengeful onstage spirit who’s death a decade earlier still seeks revenge!

The Cringe Festival thrives on bold risks, utilizing Nas Parvizi’s stage management and Zen George’s lights and sound to turn the Brickhouse space into a shifting labyrinth of the terrifying and hilarious. The ensemble balances genuine chills with absurd comedy, making it a must-see for adventurous NoHo locals and lovers of Halloween frivolities.

I always look forward to what Write Act conjures up, and this year’s Cringe Fest might just be the best one yet!!!

Wonderful writing, heartfelt performances, and tender moments interspersed with dred! Perfection!
