Prime Video’s The Devil’s Mouth takes the familiar approach associated with shark movies and makes it way more claustrophobic. Rather than having the characters be in exposed water, they are trapped in a remote cave system known as The Devil’s Mouth.
The Deep Sea Has Long Captivated People’s Imagination

Spielberg’s Jaws sets the benchmark for shark movies, as the film turned the Great White into one of the most recognisable monsters. The movie grossed $495 million and went on to inspire other deep-sea titles, like 47 Metres Down and Open Water.
The Devil’s Mouth fits into a wider interest in ocean entertainment. David Attenborough’s Blue Planet is a prime example, as it helped to bring underwater wildlife into mainstream television. Netflix’s Our Oceans takes a similar approach for streaming audiences.
Netflix’s Our Oceans also taps into the allure of deep-sea creatures. Outside of television, the deep sea is also a major theme. Apple’s Ocean’s Under Water podcast is an example, and in iGaming, the Big Bass Trophy Catch slot game showcases aquatic imagery with fishing rods, bass, kelp, and other inspired oceanography.
Fishing shows the unpredictability of what’s beneath the surface, and with a 23% year-on-year increase for fishing licenses, it’s clear that people are continually drawn to the mysteries of the deep, which is one of the reasons why The Devil’s Mouth works so well.
In The Devil’s Mouth, the characters can’t call for help or even see clearly. Caves intensify this fear, as there’s very little space to move, and the sharks might be close without being visible. This sets the foundation for a great horror movie.
Uncertainty is the Hallmark of a Good Horror Movie
One of the things that makes underwater horror so effective is its unpredictability. A dark hallway might be unsettling, but in a small, underwater cave, issues like drowning, disorientation, and claustrophobia are evident.
During the movie, a freak storm floods the cave network, which doesn’t just allow sharks in, but other marine life, elevating the stakes even further. Starring in the movie are Sara McKenna, Lana Condor, Gavin Casalegno, Tommi Rose and Nicro Hairaga. The 2026 survival movie debuted on Prime Video on 29 July, and was directed by Jeff Wadlow.
The shark survival thriller has achieved huge global success so far, immediately jumping to the number one spot in the most-streamed movie charts. Even though it received mixed reviews, it rose to the top spot on Prime Video within days of its release. Audience curiosity combined with strong engagement helped the movie to draw attention on social media.
The intensity of the shooting schedule helped to highlight the real struggles undergone by the characters in the movie. The shoot required actors to undergo two weeks of treading water, as well as kayaking preparation and breath-holding training. This was to add authenticity to the film, and it helped the actors understand the situation their characters were in, which contributed to their stellar performances.
