About Ritual Music to Cure a Lover
Ritual Music to Cure a Lover is the story of today’s Iran. Youth, rising up against their Fathers’ choices. It is the story of love overcoming hate and light, destroying darkness. A battle between a son and his father. A play that reflects the cultural revolution taking place in the streets of Iran, right now.
Ritual is the story of forbidden love, a family divided by long-held secrets, and a community trying to find balance between traditional ways and the modern world. The play culminates in a Zaar/Exorcism ceremony, intended to rid a young man of the “sickness” of his love for an outcast woman, that ultimately reveals a father’s long-buried secrets.
In Ritual, Shahin reimagines mythological figures from Iranian poetry and fuses traditional icons and storytelling and seamlessly shifts between multiple characters and temporalities, while weaving together inter-generational perspectives that provide a panoramic viewpoint into the struggles of a community transitioning from a traditional to modern society. Fighting darkness to step back into the light.
Praise for Ritual Music to Cure a Lover
“…especially compelling as the female characters (which is so rarely the case for a male actor). He grounds both women in the play in respect and finds such simple and nuanced ways to shift between the characters.” – Amanda Campbell, From The Way I See It Theatre Blog
“It’s amazing what one man can do with cloth, music and light.” – Elissa Barnard, Chronicle Herald
“…reminding [us of] a new future, without the freedom to think differently from the status quo, is perhaps more dangerous.” – Eric Abramian, Writer
