[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts theatre review of Broken Token Productions’ Le Switch by Philip Dawkins, directed by Spenser Davis, running through November 15.
Serendipity. When the universe gives you that which you do not know you need. And even when you try your hardest to resist it, like a wave rippling against your ankles on the shores of the ocean, you are truly powerless to refute it.
Le Switch is a stunningly beautiful play packed full of opportunities to fall in love with every single hilarious and heartfelt character as they stumble along through their complicated and deeply relatable lives. Every one of them ricocheting from moment to moment to revelation, with all the ease that any of us has. Which isn’t much. But these stories, all wrapped around one central character, David, a more than slightly uptight librarian. They have their own entertaining, important, and ultimately gorgeously completed arch. Once they all individually discover that surrendering yourself to the universe really is the only way to survive, that is.

I absolutely loved this brilliant and brutally honest play. There truly are no small roles, only sweetly supporting ones. And wow, what incredible performances these very fine actors gift us. Full of nuance and thoughtfulness, heartbreak, humor and vulnerability. We adore them, even when they fight their hardest not to crumble, and perhaps because they do.
Le Switch is all about love, of course. What isn’t in the end? Love and fear and friends closer than any family, and in that way it is very modern. But it is also timeless, in love and life lessons, and in the rapturous untangling of lives. It is our chosen family and our chosen lives that make all the cracks in our armor and let the light flood in. How infinitely fortunate we are to be human then, even in this insane and unsettling time.

Le Switch is a magical reminder of that. Theatre is always a salve for sorrows and this lovely, unforgettable play magnificently healed me of the chaos all around us and gave me hope. With its truly wonderful performances and the magical story so deftly and innovatively staged and directed.
I felt enormous happiness, sitting in my little seat, sharing such joy with strangers. Laughing out loud and clutching tightly to my water bottle in all the romantic parts…and their are many.

Le Switch is an unbridled and beautifully written careen through love and life, with some phenomenal actors revelling in this outstanding material.
I absolutely loved it and believe me when I tell you, you will fall as hard as I did for Le Switch!! Bravo!!!!
