MEET ME AT THE MURAL INITIATIVE
The LAX Art Program is embarking on the next phase of its Meet Me at the Mural initiative, which saw the completion of nine large-scale murals within the past three years. The program honors Los Angeles’ century-long history of mural creation and evolution, and the community-based public initiatives that have enriched neighborhoods and cultivated innumerable public murals throughout the city. This next phase of LAX’s mural initiative shares in the city’s ever-expanding and vibrant public mural projects and initiatives throughout civic spaces, a continuing source of pride for Angelenos and new visual experiences for visitors.
Meet Me at the Mural is a project within the LAX Art Exhibition Program to invite new voices to
contribute to the city’s enduring murals legacy. The purpose of the initiative is to present a
wide range of large-scale, two-dimensional artworks at LAX, particularly at terminal entrances,
transition zones, or dwell areas to create an inviting and memorable visual environment. The
initiative was developed with the passenger experience in mind and will highlight the diverse range of art practices by Los Angeles artists. The distinctive artworks will help serve as visual markers within the terminals, assist in passenger wayfinding, and create a welcoming atmosphere.
LAX is seeking a variety of styles and media appropriate for display on a large wall, including
artworks painted directly on the wall or onto panels or other durable substrate in the artist’s studio to be installed onto the wall; digitally reproduced new or existing artworks onto canvas, vinyl or other durable material appropriate for mural printing and installation; or mixed-media works.
Acceptable mixed-media materials could include photography, textiles, paper, and wood. Artwork must be scaled appropriately for the respective wall. As part of the airport’s current transformation efforts, select artists will have the opportunity to interpret and expand on themes that contribute to LAX’s narrative and sense of place, bringing their unique perspectives to reflect the city’s identity through their work.
