What was your first experience with yoga?

In 2004 I took a six-week intensive with Sophie Boller at Santa Monica College and I have been hooked on yoga ever since.   I have studied with some amazing, world-renowned teachers all of whom have guided me on my journey to becoming a teacher myself.

Yoga has helped me tap into my strength and mental fortitude.  Though the practice and study of yoga I was able to cultivate a relationship with the physical body and penetrate the many layers of the inner-self.  Yoga can serve as a tool to cultivate this connection and to become more present, intuitive and knowledgeable about the self.

What is Iyengar yoga?

Iyengar yoga uses precise language to highlight specific points of action, and the correction and adjustment of students as they move through a sequence of poses.  It has been shown to improve posture, and increase strength and flexibility.  It’s also beneficial for common physiological ailments such as back pain, tech-neck, and various other discomforts that accumulate from daily stressors. Iyengar yoga is based on the teaching and writings of BKS Iyengar, who is credited with bringing yoga to the West.

Can you give us a bit more about your training?

I am a graduate of the Iyengar Yoga Three Year Training Program. This was a rigorous, intensive yoga study and practice that prepares its students for teacher certification assessment.

Additionally, I spent time in Pune, India in 2015 studying with Greta Iyengar, (who was the daughter of BKS Iyengar as well as his successor) at a pranayama (rhythmic control of breath) intensive.  I was there with hundreds of people from all over the world practicing asana and pranayama.

I continue to study with senior Iyengar teachers.

I have taught at all the major yoga studios such as Yogaworks, Namastday Beverly Hills, and currently at The BKS Iyengar Yoga Center of Santa Monica, the only yoga studio in all of L.A. dedicated to Iyengar Yoga.

Can you give us a description of your NoHo classes?

At Yoga with Selene I teach all levels of classes from beginners to advanced, in English as well as Spanish.

Every week is a different focus such as standing poses, forward bends, backbends and restorative.  Some classes are more dynamic and stimulating, such as backbends. Other classes can have the opposite effect, and be soothing and restorative; forward bends, for instance, are cooling poses that calm the mind. I also teach specific classes such as yoga for a healthy back and yoga for tech neck.

I also love teaching kids’ classes.  My students describe my classes as dynamic, challenging and motivational; the kids describe it as fun.

Additionally, I teach one-on-one privates to serious students.

Coming up at Yoga with Selene is beginning yoga and bilingual English/Spanish yoga courses.
