…
Oh how many fond memories I have of late night kebabs. Post clubbing in my 20s in the UK, 4am forays into the deep deliciousness of this quintessential Mediterranean cuisine. Marinaded meats, soft warm pitas and layers of sauces and tomatoes and lettuce and cucumber…aahhh. Enough to fill my tired heart with glee and head off the very worst hangover.
Urban Kebabs has finally brought this mana to NoHo…and boy do they know what they are doing!
Everything is prepared fresh each day. Every sauce, every meat, every salad and spice, all lovingly reborn and individually assembled for each new guest. And they have far more than kebabs. Their falafel is heaven….moist on the inside, crispy on the outside and with just enough chunkiness to taste every single sublime component. I am of the opinion that there’s nothing so sad as a bad falafel. But fear not dear NoHo peeps, Urban Kabab’s falafels are perfection!
Only open a matter of weeks and already a mainstay of the NoHo scene, Urban Kebabs is a unique, a totally new concept. The owners, Michael and Kevin, wanted to give NoHo the very best of their Armenian roots and the recipes they have created are a gorgeous blend of the simple and complex, the fresh, cool and crispy mixed with warm spiced and succulent. All the sauces and salads present a lovely variety of flavors. The meats are cooked in front of your very eyes as you order on a huge and wonderful charcoal grill, which fills the place with such a delightful earthy aroma. As your pitas warm, your salads are assembled and your falafels drizzled in their homemade tahini. The chicken shawarma is skewered and grilled and then piled on your plate. Their New Zealand lamb chops are succulent and perfectly pink, their hummus smokey and tangy, their serious Baklava is generous and not too sweet, which is exactly how I like it!
There’s really a lot to choose from here and if you are a little unsure of what to get or which salads or sauces to chose as accompaniment then the adorable staff are more than willing to help. They will guide you and make recommendations and help you plan your meal. They also have tasting plates if you desire a little bit of everything. Who could blame you?
They serve beer and wine, thankfully, and the soda fountain is a rather nice touch too, lovely light flavors that won’t mask the spectacular food! Urban Kebab is a great addition to our neighborhood and we should all be thankful that a place created by people with such a love for what they do exists for us to bliss out in. I know it’s now right at the top of my list of NoHo eateries and I honestly can’t recommend it enough!! If you don’t believe me then check out their Yelp reviews…not too shabby!
I also love how they took what was a local NoHo body shop and repurposed it. They kept the paint spackled floor, the ceiling with its exposed beams and what they did ad is thoughtful, artful and gives the place a kind of heroic ambiance. They kept the driveway, and the seats feel like you’re sitting in the back of an old American car but not in an obvious way. It’s warm and welcoming industrial!Â
They hired multi-talented visual artist Tomer Peretz to paint murals of the spacious patio and the whole things feels authentic and special.
It took a year and a half for them to get Urban Kabab open and they hope to initiate us into the wonderful world of Kebab with their thoughtful menu, huge portions of deliciousness and lovely helpful staff. I think it’s the perfect place to explore the unforgettable flavors of Kebab. Love it!!!
