Solofest - "Ageless Wonders: when did I become a Senior” @ Whitefire Theater.

I had the privilege of attending a one-woman show written and performed by Mindy Fradkin, “Ageless Wonders,” at the 2018 Solofest at the Whitefire Theater.

As an actor, the thought of performing a one-woman show is at once both scary and yet somehow strangely alluring.  From the "Ageless Wonders" poster of a wacky lady wearing an amazing hat with a background of classic 60s symbols, daisies and psychedelic colors, I already had premonitions of what was to come. Imagine my surprise, along with everyone else who enters Ms. Fradkin’s world, her set replete with loveseat, feather boas, hats, hats, mirrors and more hats. You immediately occupy Mindy’s world and cannot wait for her to begin.  She radiates such charm and honesty with her organic performance; it feels as if she’s speaking directly to you.  She reads and consults her hot pink furry diary, and even some of the little hiccups along the way are absolutely charming. Even though this is a solo effort she introduces the musical stylings of, as she calls, “her ‘was-band’ (ex-husband), Roland Mousaa, who skillfully plays an assortment of folk-rock, sing-a-long songs.

Mindy takes you on an interactive trip through time while declaring there is no such thing.

She shows pictures of herself, from a child to present-day and tackles all the taboos of ageism and her delivery is as charming as the hats she wears. The Smile Revolution is what it’s all about as she leads you into song and the audience cannot help but join in. Mindy’s talent is what sweeps you into her world and it’s evident in her artistry, ranging from a wardrobe milliner in film to commercials and her entertaining performance in her wonderful solo show.  Whereas other performers may rely on ego-trips and self-aggrandizing stories, she takes you by the hand and you go willingly into her world.  All the while searching for solutions to ageist, creating a new vocabulary for it and including the audience with them donning her hats, and practicing the art of smiling.  Miss Mindy Fradkin is a wonderful, living work of art.   If at all possible do not miss this work of art, this ‘ageless wonder’ known as Mindy Fradkin.
