Is the art world going to the dogs?

Bitches and Sons of Bitches

Part of our job here at www.nohoartsdistrict.com is to feature unique classes, people, shows and events happening in our growing NoHo Arts District. One space we are particularly proud of is the Gallery @ NoHoSAC  - a contemporary space that is the perfect backdrop to display the work of our local visual artists. The gallery is located in the NoHo Senior Arts Colony and the space is shared with the award-winning Road Theatre Company, making it a “colony of arts.” The next show at the Gallery @NoHoSAC will feature the works of photographer Lisa Dragani in the solo show “Bitches and Sons of Bitches” with a free opening reception on Tuesday, February 24 from 6-8PM.

WHAT: SOLO ExhiBITCHion 2015 - Bitches and Sons of Bitches
WHERE: NoHo Senior Arts Colony
10747 Magnolia Blvd .
North Hollywood, California 91601
Show Run: February 24th – April 12th 2015
Opening Reception: Tuesday, February 24th (6-8pm)

Tell us a bit more about the upcoming exhibit.

Bitches and Sons of Bitches is a personal on going project combining shelter, rescue and domestic dog portraits.

Lisa Dragani Bitches and Sons of Bitches www.nohoartsdistrict.com

Why did you choose an exhibit highlighting dogs?

It's been a project I have been working on for a while. I was doing a lot of dog sitting for friends and friends of friends and would send them pics of their pets while they were away. Then I was asked to volunteer at a rescue organization and then at the shelter and it kind of spiraled from there. Seeing the sadness of the shelter inspired me to photograph homeless dogs every week.

What do you consider your greatest achievement using your art?

Helping save lives of homeless pets has been the most rewarding. There is nothing better than hearing that your image helped with the healthy adoption of an animal.

When did you first discover you wanted to have a career as an artist?

My early 20s. I went to art school in Boston, but never thought you could live as an artist, and I didn't want to starve. It wasn't until I started working with successful photographers that it seemed possible. It's a difficult but rewarding field. Fortunately I have a great day job that pays the bills and photography has become a great part-time job and passion.

I have contributed to the Downtown Art Walk, The Julia Dean Gallery and most recently was part of the APA-Los Angeles Off the Clock Exhibit which was exhibited at Saatchi and Saatchi LA, TBWA\CHIAT\DAY\LA, Ignited and Photo LA 2015.

Win a trip to see theatre in London from Theatermania!

Theatermania Specatular Weekend in London sweepstakes www.nohoartsdistrict.com

As a one-square-mile neighborhood with more than 20 theatres, the NoHo Arts District has the highest concentration of theatres outside of New York City. NoHo is definitely a theatre district. So North Hollywood theatre lovers, mark your calendars for February 13-16, 2015 because you may be going to see theatre in London!

Our friends at TheaterMania, the nation's leading publisher of theater news and reviews, and source for tickets, has launched its Spectacular Theater Weekend in London Sweepstakes. The sweepstakes winner will be awarded round trip airfare for two to London, two nights at an exclusive hotel, two VIP tickets to the prestigious WhatsOnStage Awards, and more.

One winner and a guest will win the prize of:
• Round trip airfare for two to London
• A two night stay at the Radisson Blu London
• Dinner for two for both nights of the trip
• Two tickets to a West End show
• A VIP theater experience at the prestigious WhatsOnStage Awards

"We've had tremendous success reaching new audiences on Facebook this past year, and we're excited to offer such a compelling prize to theater fans nationwide," said Darren Sussman, president of TheaterMania. "We're excited to be partnering with our London sister company, WhatsOnStage and the WhatsOnStage Awards for this truly unique sweepstakes."

Enter to win! Visit http://www.theatermania.com/contest/london-trip/ or the company's Facebook page to enter.

Did you know that the WhatsOnStage Awards are the only major UK theatre awards decided by the public, with more than 60,000 people voting each year? The awards are produced by WhatsOnStage.com, the place to go for theatre performances in all of the UK, plus unrivaled theatre news, reviews, photos, interviews, gossip, blogs and features.

“Now in their 15th year, the awards are bigger and better than ever, with a ceremony and concert held at the West End's Prince of Wales Theatre featuring presentation of the prizes alongside star performances, “ says WhatsOnStage spokesperson Rosie Bannister. “As the West End and Broadway divide narrows, and we each welcome more shows both ways across the Atlantic, we look forward to sharing with you our celebration of the year in theatre.”

WhatsonStage.com Awards www.nohoartsdistrict.com

What can a guest expect at the awards?

The Awards Concert is co-hosted by comedian Mel Giedroyc and sees all the winners collect their prizes, alongside performances from West End stars. This year's nominees include Tom Hiddleston, Gillian Anderson, David Tennant and Gemma Arterton.

What sets the awards apart?

The WhatsOnStage Awards are the only major theatre awards in which the audience preside over nominations and winners across every category, meaning that theatregoers can show their support for their favourite productions that have opened through the year. Unlike many other awards ceremonies, a majority of our concert tickets are sold to the public.

What's exciting that's coming up in the London theatre scene?

Exciting musicals coming to London soon include Carol King musical Beautiful from Broadway and the West End transfer of Gypsy starring Imelda Staunton. We've also got the return of The Audience, which will be running simultaneously in London and New York, and a musical version of hit British film Bend it Like Beckham. Looking further ahead, don't miss Benedict Cumberbatch in Hamlet at the Barbican later next year.

NoHo Senior Re-Writing Retirement

Written by

Meet NoHo Senior Arts Colony Resident Rick McManus

Rick McManus NoHo Senior Arts Colony www.nohoartsdistrict.com

Seniors Are Re-Writing Retirement Just Ask Author Rick McManus.  The days of pondering retirement might weigh heavily on the minds of some adults, but for many at a local apartment community the word “retired” is almost nonexistent among residents.

That’s because these residents are exploring new career paths, chasing down dreams, and inspiring the rest of us with their sizable accomplishments, during a time in their lives when they would typically be into retirement.

Rick McManus, a resident of the NoHo Senior Arts Colony Apartments, is 76 years old and has truly redefined what it means to be retired.

Recently publishing his sixth book, McManus has no intention of slowing down. He enjoys sharing his books with others and focuses on writing stories that offer a powerful message to readers.

Prior to becoming a writer, McManus worked in the real estate industry where he settled in the small coastal town of La Jolla, Calif. He spent the majority of his career working in real estate, but discovered his deep passion for writing in the late 1960s while working for a local newspaper in Boston.

Although McManus enjoyed many years in La Jolla with its beautiful beaches and excellent weather, there was something that appeared to be missing.

It wasn’t long before he discovered the NoHo Senior Arts Colony Apartments in North Hollywood. He was intrigued by the community’s appeal and arts focused concept. “At this community, I am surrounded by artists and like-minded individuals who are also discovering new career paths at this stage in their lives.”

Moving into this community in April of this year, McManus says, “I couldn’t go back to my life in La Jolla even if I wanted to. I am closer to my son, daughter-in-law, and three young granddaughters and there is so much more activity and interaction here.”

McManus had no idea what to expect when he moved in, but he soon found himself surrounded by activities, friends and opportunities that he would not have had otherwise.

Since moving into the community, McManus has kicked his writing into full gear.

His most recent novel “Empty Earth” tells a story in which almost the entire world population has been eliminated through unending violent weather disasters caused by excessive climate change. The novel demonstrates the effect climate change can have on our planet, while bringing a twist of young love to the story.

The novel takes readers on a journey to find an answer to global warming that has nothing to do with technology, as two young individuals try to survive in this new world where everything has been destroyed, everything but their love for each other.

This book is among five others that McManus has previously published, and he doesn’t anticipate it being the last.

At 76 years old, redefining what it means to be retired, McManus is an inspiration to us all, and a reminder that just because you’ve reached the age of retirement, doesn’t mean you have to retire your passions.

About Rick McManus:
McManus is an author who currently lives at the NoHo Senior Arts Colony Apartments. Originally from El Centro, he relocated and settled in the small coastal city of La Jolla, California twenty years ago. Throughout his career he has worked for The Voice of America in Washington, D.C., the U.S. State Department as a diplomatic courier in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and The Christian Science Monitor in Boston as a news reporter.

McManus has written several works including two novels and three books that focus on his family. He is currently marketing his novel “Empty Earth” through Facebook and his webpage, rickmcmanus.com.

It’s “Crazy Love You” Time

Written by

“Crazy Love You”

Author Lisa Unger makes her West Coast literary premiere at NoHo’s Blastoff Comics for her new novel “CRAZY LOVE YOU,” a psychological thriller that Booklist called "Superb, complex and riveting."

“Well, it's actually "Romance" that we're focusing on this month on our website! I'd say that "Crazy Love You," while frightening in its dark and obsessive characters, is, at its heart, a pitch-black romance.” – Jud Meyers, owner of Blastoff Comics

In addition to a reading from the novel, guests can look forward to a conversation between Lisa and crime novelist Gregg Hurwitz!

WHAT: An evening with Lisa Unger, author of “CRAZY LOVE YOU”
WHEN: Saturday, February 21 at 7:30PM
WHERE: Blastoff Comics. 5118 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood, California 91601

Crazy Love You Synopsis

Love hurts. Sometimes it even kills… Darkness has a way of creeping up when Ian is with Priss. Even when they were kids, playing in the woods of their small Upstate New York town, he could feel it. Still, Priss was his best friend, his salvation from the bullies who called him “loser” and “fatboy”… and from his family’s deadly secrets.

Now that they’ve both escaped to New York City, Ian no longer inhabits the tortured shell of his childhood. He is a talented and successful graphic novelist, and Priss… Priss is still trouble. The booze, the drugs, the sex—Ian is growing tired of late nights together trying to keep the past at bay. Especially now that he’s met sweet, beautiful Megan, whose love makes him want to change for the better. But Priss doesn’t like change. Change makes her angry. And when Priss is angry, terrible things begin to happen…

Pre-Release Praise!

“Riveting … This is a complex, intricate story, yet the pages fly by as Ian, the most unreliable narrator since Nick Dunne in Gone Girl, leads us on a wild ride in this superb psychological thriller. Unger is at the top of her game here.” —Booklist (starred review)

Lisa Unger Blastoff Comics book signing www.nohoartsdistrict.comAbout Lisa

Throughout her 12-year career, she has walked the fine line between literary novels and commercial thrillers all the while hitting The New York Times bestseller lists and earning both critical acclaim and millions of fans worldwide.

Blastoff Comics www.nohoartsdistrict.com

We asked our pal Jud Meyers, owner of NoHo’s Blastoff Comics, about the event and some things that are coming up.

Why did you choose Lisa Unger's new book for a reading at Blastoff?

Lisa actually suggested to Simon and Schuster that our store would be a great fit for a west coast premiere event. Gregg Hurwitz had sent Lisa to me over a year ago when she was still researching the book. Because the main protagonist is a graphic novelist, she was anxious to make sure the dialogue and syntax were as authentic as possible. It's something I'd never consulted on before and it was a lot of fun. I'm glad to say that the night won't just be about a reading. Another unique element of the evening is that Lisa will be joined by Gregg! Having two award-winning novelists doing an "Iconoclast" style talk where they interview each other about their writing process and experiences in the Crime/Thriller genre adds a whole other level of excitement.

Will you continue to do readings of non-comics /graphic novels?

Absolutely. We're selling more and more prose books at the shop, providing the neighborhood with an underserved product. We've reached a point in both mediums where readers don't really care whether a novel is "graphic" and accompanied by stylized art or if it's just words on a page. A great story is a great story and I think readers will always be interested in hearing the creators themselves discuss how they set about developing it.

Pssst. SAVE THE DATE!

Get ready for SATURDAY, MAY 2, North Hollywood! It's not only Free Comic Book Day (always a huge event for our city), but Blastoff will take over The Federal Bar for the 1st Annual BLASTOFF COMIC FEST! Stay tuned...
