A review of Tanuki Project’s “Adamant_CHAPTER#01” EP release.
Tanuki Project is a trip hop/downtempo electronic and visual music duo based in Montreal. The music of “Adamant_CHAPTER#01“ is spacious, cinematic, sweetly flipping from soulful vocals to invertebrate rhythms and pulsing acoustic electronica.
Each track feels like a memory told in musical sepia. There’s a longing to the sound, a touch of Portishead, a dash of Jane Siberry. However, it’s a music thats really all their own. They are apparently brilliant live performers, using light and video visuals to communicate their sound more viscerally. But, if the music is anything to go by, then live they must be stunning.
Here we can only listen to them. Although, the video for “Slow” is truly gorgeous and you can, I think, get a real feel for their personalities and their musical message through it.
Tanuki Project’s “Adamant_CHAPTER#01” is extraordinarily good. Resonating, warm, futuristic, gorgeously sci-fi, hopeful in its dark refrains.
It’s very gentle in its sadness, quiet in its surrender to the inevitable. But there’s such a lightness too. Moody but beautiful, achingly melancholy, intricate and yet astonishingly simple. Just a truly fantastic collection of songs. I really cant wait for more from them!
Favorite song? Well, it’s hard to pick really, but probably “Stone.” Just a gorgeous, pulsing, softly charmingly triggering song. Loved it.
