What is Soca?
Soca is island music and dance coming from the southern most region of the Caribbean, the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. With its fast beat tempo, Soca music and dance is highly regarded and loved by all. You’ll find Soca is everywhere from festivals to Carnivals, and dance clubs to every event throughout the Caribbean region.
What is Dancehall?
Dancehall is a style of music that originated in Jamaica. The name Dancehall was created from the term “dance hall” a place that many inner city people would gather to dance and enjoy local music. The dance style became popular when the music artist starting combining instructional songs with dances. Giving everyone the option to follow along to the song. Dancehall is now one of the most popular Caribbean dance styles worldwide.
What is Soca meets Dancehall?
Soca meets Dancehall is a class that takes you through a series of movements created in the Caribbean. Mostly accompanied by instructional songs that guide you on how to do the dances. It is a family friendly style of dancing and can be done by all ages and genders.
What will people expect from the NoHo Plaza class?
Expect to have fun and enjoy a taste of the Caribbean!
Is the class for beginners as well?
This class is for all levels. The movements are basic and can be done by everyone. I will be demonstrating a series of movements in a follow along format.
Should we practice how to “Whine” before we come? Can you explain what that is for folks who don’t know?
“Whining” is the correct Caribbean term that refers to the swiveling of the hips that Caribbean dance is loved for. This is done by both males and females and is often done solo or with a partner. To practice whining your hips, wear only what is comfortable and make sure you can see your hips in the mirror. As your standing, keep your feet shoulder width apart, slightly bend your knees, and relax your body. Place your hands on your hips and feel your hips moving in a clockwise motion. As you rotate your hips around, push your butt out and when you circle around to your front, tighten your stomach. With practice, you’ll be able to whine up that special someone in no time.
