Rue Brown “Sugar Baby/Make Me Smile”

What We’re Listening to…Rue Brown.

Soulful songstress and storyteller Rue Brown gives us melodic tales with “Sugar Baby/Make Me Smile” at Sofar NYC.

Have you ever been to a Sofar show? Sofar is simply songs from a room and that’s what they do. They pick unique venues all over Los Angeles (and the world, 444+ cities and growing) and three acts take the stage for four songs each to give us an intimate show of new music. You don’t know where exactly the place will be, just a general area like NoHo Arts District, Venice, Hollywood, etc. The day before they send you the exact location. But you still don’t know who you’ll hear until you get there. We love the musical surprises!

Here’s Rue Brown’s Sofar NYC show…enjoy!

Rue’s Facebook about section gives us a quick soundbyte into who she is as an artist. “Rue Brown is a multifaceted singer, with a strong background in dance and musical theater. Born and raised in D.C. and now residing in Brooklyn. Ms. Brown is a blend of jazz, hip hop & soul, a unique sound that reflects her journey, love, and the times.” Yep.

We picked her for this month’s What We’re Listening to music blog because we were captivated by her rhythmic story about finding love in a most unexpected place. It was accompanied by music – her soulful voice, a trumpet player, snare drum and backup singers who helped tell her story. She sprinkled in spoken word rhymes then switched back to song. It was an enthralling story we didn’t want to end.

And during these shopping days it sort of fit perfectly. But more than that, we need more stories in our lives. Happy ending stories would be nice too. To hear more melodic Rue Brown songs, check out her soundcloud.

May the new year be filled with fun stories, experiences and lots of love….and some good deals on shoes.
