These women show the power of believing in yourself.

There are a whole load of reasons why we might need a little inspiration from time to time. It could be something as simple as an off day at work, or something as confusing as struggling to find your path in life. Whatever the reason you need inspiration, if you’re a woman, then you’re in safe hands. There are more and more films being released all the time that feature a strong female character and as the saying goes, ‘if you can see it, you can be it’. So, put down the box of tissues, quit the pity party and get ready to watch these kickass women showing what it really means to be strong.

Matilda (1996)

Some will fondly remember reading Roald Dahl’s book Matilda, published all the way back in 1988. He’d based the book partly on experiences from his own life, including some of the not-so-pleasant characters. Fast forward to 1996 and Danny DeVito was tasked with turning the script for Matilda into a blockbusting film. Matilda Wormwood is the main character in the story, a young girl who’s incredibly intelligent, but totally unappreciated and even bullied by her parents and her brother. At school, things aren’t much better for Matilda, her teacher Miss Honey understands her and encourages her endlessly, but the tyrannical principal Miss Trunchbull makes her life a living hell. Matilda develops psychokinetic abilities that help her to deal with the struggles she faces at home and at school, sometimes ending in hilarious situations. To this day, Matilda is a favourite for people young and old, and whether you’ve seen it a thousand times before or never even heard of it, it’s one to add to your watch list.

Hidden Figures (2016)

Hidden Figures tells a small part of the Space Race story.

Although we live in a society where racism is still far more present than it ought to be, back in the 50s and 60s, racism was rife in America. Hidden Figures tells the incredible (and mostly true) story of three African-American women who played a pivotal role for NASA in the Space Race. The trio of women are all real people who worked as mathematicians on John Glenn’s rocket launch. Despite having to work in a segregated unit, not receiving nearly the recognition of their white male peers, and having their skills repeatedly dismissed, the three women all contribute their wealth of knowledge to the NASA project. However, it is deemed that the flight should go ahead using computers rather than humans to ‘do the math’. This decision nearly proves catastrophic for the launch and Katherine is called upon to check the calculations of the computer, finding a discrepancy and ultimately saving the flight. Although this film uses a little poetic license, the women who are portrayed in it are all based on very real humans. Being an inspiration is no mean feat, but doing it when the whole world seems to be working against you is quite another.

Molly’s Game (2012)

Molly’s Game tells the story of a truly extraordinary woman, Molly Bloom. She used to be an Olympian skier, but at the end of her skiing career instead discovered she had quite the talent for throwing incredible poker parties. Her poker games grew and grew in reputation until before long she had a list of attendees made almost entirely of A-List celebrities. Politicians, actors, musicians and even royalty clamoured to be invited to her games. It all looked like it was going well for Molly until the FBI caught wind of what she was up to. We won’t ruin the film for you by going into what happens next but suffice it to say this is one of those films that proves that the truth is sometimes stranger than fiction. Despite the film being largely set in the USA, in real life, Molly’s endeavours took her all over the world to a variety of exotic locations. Those who enjoy playing poker in the Western world will likely be just as familiar with her story as those playing in the East. Poker is a universally enjoyed game which is why sites like Asiabet compile useful information on casinos for countries all over Asia, including Thailand. If you’re looking for online casino reviews, known in Thailand as รีวิวคาสิโนออนไลน์, then this would be a good place to find them. Their reviews are impartial and give the lowdown on the sorts of games available, as well as the deposit options. Suffice it to say though, anyone who wanted to play on one of Molly’s high roller tables might think again after watching this film and stick to the online gaming instead.
