Black Reuss’s “Metamorphosis” is heavy. Heavy metal of course, but also heavy in tone and subject and meaning.
The song titles read like a journey through a life. Incomplete, Grief, Fear, Anger, Pride, Lifeblood, Zeal, Acceptance, Mind, Joy, Inspirations and Exodus. All steps on a mountain one human travels.
Fitting then that this band is based in Liechtenstein. A tiny but fiercely independent alpine nation held between Austria and Switzerland. This mountainous and remote country, full of castles and art is so far from the US conventions and way of life. Its history soaked in music, culture and ancient man. How fitting that this album, so dark and aching, came from there.
The songs are epic, huge, dense and glorious. Each one seems monolithic somehow. Although they are all still tightly connected of course.
The vocals are majestic. Deep, layered, choruses of song, like great marching armies, forlornly searching for their own meaning.
Black Reuss’s“Metamorphosis” is both tragic and hopeful. Like our world. Full of double meanings and old regrets and strange untraceable traditions.
The dark is so deep it glistens somehow, like a shadow that contains something. Yet, you can’t quite make it out, although you know it’s there, watching you.
I did not expect to like this album. I’m not a big heavy metal fan.
But, this album is more rich than heavy. More bejewelled and encrusted than dirty or loud. “Metamorphosis” is beautifully operatic and intensely purposeful. It draws you in and holds you fast. Loved it!!
