Noel Katz – Musical Theater
A course in applying acting skills to songs for both performances and auditions. Some of the interpretive exercises are derived from the work of David Craig, who was summoned out of retirement by Harold Prince and Stephen Sondheim to train a new generation of performers to handle the material they innovated in the 1970s. Audition techniques derive from five decades spent in New York audition rooms. Noel offers the perspective of someone who’s written and produced sixteen musicals, and is the husband of eminent casting director Joy Dewing. Noel Katz’s career began over 40 years ago, with the legendary Hollywood improv troupe, Off the Wall, where he worked with the then-undiscovered Robin Williams. He’s taught musical theatre performance since the 1990s at Second City, Fairleigh-Dickinson University, Circle-in-the-Square New York, Artistic New Directions, Orange County School of the Arts and The Wallis-Annenberg. As a musical theatre writer, he’s had sixteen shows produced, including Such Good Friends, the much-awarded hit of 2007’s New York Musical Theater Festival, and his all-sung wedding to casting director Joy Dewing at the Soho Playhouse.
