A NoHo Arts theatre review of In the Unlikely Event of an Actual Emergency, written by John Mullican, directed by Rickie Peete and produced by Andrea Meshel at Hudson Guild Theatre through October 26.
Theatre West is kicking off their Plays on Words -- A Reading Series featuring New Works, Timeless Classics, and Forgotten Gems with the much-anticipated adaptation for the stage of the novel California Soul: A Descendent’s Story, written by John A. Goux and directed by Victoria Lavan on Sunday, October 6.
Completeness is a brilliant brilliant play. The actors whizz through this gorgeous funny and painfully real dialogue with lighting speed but also with phenomenal care. You don’t miss a syllable. Which is important because there is an awful lot of words…
But what could feel terse and effected is actually gentle and heartfelt.
The (Mostly) True Story of a Common Scold. Bravo to the writer Mike Teverbaugh for taking on such an important and long-forgotten story and for doing so with as much heart and intelligence as Anne Royall did with everything in her life. I wonder what she would have to say about this play and these times we live in.
Standing By is a hugely entertaining play. But it takes really excellent actors to lift it off the page and make it real. Ellen and Jeffrey are such brilliant characters. Full of virtue and vice, vulnerable, interesting and compelling. Bravo to these fine actors for packing them full of life and making them real.

A NoHo Arts music review of Post Death Soundtrack’s fourth album, Veil Lifter. Make no mistake, Veil Lifter is heavy…heavy in theme and heavy in sound. But what surprised me most about this really excellent and darkly soulful album was how from the depths of despair rises over and over in almost every track a visceral hopeful cry.
