"#Right2Recess," a Theatre for Young Audiences play, a part of NoHo Fringe, at Acme NoHo, Saturday, Nov 11 - Sunday, Nov 12.
This play was produced as part of the NoHo Fringe but is a project that will be shown at other venues over the next year.
I honestly don’t remember when I have had more fun at a play. The Humanity Project, whose ethos is “Performance with a Purpose” has created an interactive and beautiful performed child-friendly play. It’s more than child-friendly in fact, it’s engineered to encourage empathy and acceptance and to grow in children the feeling that they have power over their environment and can, with focus, teamwork and organization, make change happen.
Set in an elementary school, "#Right2recess" follows the impact a new Principle has on the students.
Within days of the new principle’s arrival, rumors circulate that he is going to cancel recess. The reaction from four particular students, close friends and one sibling, is not to lose the favorite part of their school day so they decide to do something about it.
We follow them as they discover their voice, find ways to protest, struggle with opposing points of view and ultimately achieve their goal through teamwork, self-belief, friendship and humor - and the help of some of the school's hand puppets who magically come to life when no one is around.
It’s just brilliantly done. The actors are wonderful and so great with the kids in the audience. They manage to really become the six-year-old characters they play but without seeming silly or contrived. Children are the most discerning critics I have found, yet the children in the audience responded so positively and with such authenticity that there can be no doubt about the results.
Giving children the confidence and the power to effectively control their lives is such an incredible gift.
The Humanity Project, using this lovely and inspiring play, has proven that through something as simple as a play children are able to experience and participate in the important conversation of what it means to be a citizen in our every changing world.
I highly recommend “#Right2Recess” and encourage you to find out more about this valuable project https://humanityplayproject.com
