NoHo Fringe Presents: "Magic 8 Ball, My Life with Asperger’s"

Running November 6th - 12th at Acme Theatre & Studios, 5124 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood, 91601

This one-man show, part of the NoHo Fringe festival, is a fascinating walk in the shoes of an actor with Asperger’s.

George Steeves brings us deep into his world of awkward and adorable with an openness and an honesty that belies belief.  Few of us can really understand how difficult it can be growing up with what might seem to us to be limitations, but George manages to illuminate his life while he shares memories both terrible and wonderful.  His courage to follow his dreams is humbling and inspiring.

George moved to LA several years ago.  A trip many have taken, but for George, it must have been all the more daunting.  Yet he fills the stage with nothing but joy as he describes his journey and his continuing search for success in acting and music.  This performance is funny and engaging, sometimes sad but continually entertaining.  He sings, he shares moments that shaped him and he portrays a strength and wisdom that few possess.

One man shows are tough to pull off, especially autobiographical ones, but this gentle, intelligent and talented man has created something truly special. With the help of his two directors, Crystal and Penni Wilson, this show, which won several awards at the Hollywood Fringe this year, deserves to be noticed and, who knows, more awards even?

There are some interesting uses of mixed media, and yes, there is an actual 8 ball driving the narrative.  George is brilliantly frank and has such a gift at communicating his frustrations and his feelings about his life with humor and grace.  I came away knowing so much more about Asperger’s, but the play isn’t just about that, not at all.  Magic 8 Ball is a play about determination, focus and self-belief, and we can all do with some of that right now.

I highly recommend “Magic 8 Ball, My Life With Asperger’s”
