Above The Curve Productions Presents “Dark Stories” at the Actors Workout Studio through October 15.

Running from September 29 through October 15

We are getting to that most hallowed and creepy time of year, the time when all the theatres in NoHo begin to get their “freaky” on and for this we will remain eternally grateful.

I love a good scare, although I do tend to leave fingernail imprints in the arms rests, full disclosure. But only if it’s a good show. So the Actors Workout Studio should probably go ahead and replace the arms of the chair I was sitting in on Saturday night.

The four one-act plays, “Wheelchair,” “Lurker,” “Barefoot in Nightgown by Candlelight,” and “Crime in a Madhouse,” all have the intention to terrify of course, but not in an obvious and a brash way.  These plays are more of your psychological frighteners, just the kind of thing to keep you up at night…and really jumpy in the day…believe me.

They all mess with our expectations, all twist our perceptions of what we trust and what we hope we know to be true really, really well…

Above The Curve is a company which, in their words is, “women-driven, actor-derived, not-for-profit organization dedicated to empowering female artists and strengthening our community.”  The feminine power is certainly the focus of the night that’s for sure. However, these clever and twisted tales are rich fodder for the talented and the wise female actors, and the men are not merely hapless victims, when they are around.  No, they have purpose and presence and are fully integrated into these cunning and far from predictable stories of revenge, justice, entrapment and terrifyingly avoidable gore.

I cannot begin to tell you how great these actors are in these creepy, nightmare-inducing plays. Each and every one of them is diabolical and appallingly good. The more innocent they seem the darker the souls…just fantastic.  But by the time the last play began, my stomach was in knots, but I was still smiling.

If you feel like a fright, but don’t fancy mopping red food dye off your loafers, then hurry up and get your tickets for “Dark Stories” at The Actors Workout Studio…get a move on, the run is frighteningly short and dangerously sweetly.
