"LOST IN YONKERS"
Written by Neil Simon
Directed by Larry Eisenberg
Producer for the Group Rep is Doug Haverty
The Group Rep’s latest play is a winner, full stop!!! Neil Simon’s "LOST IN YONKERS" gives us everything we want in a play.
With a great script full of humor, poignancy, and tenderness, director Larry Eisenberg has brought all these wonderful qualities together with a great cast and stunning direction.
Neil Simon is an amazing playwright and storyteller, and "LOST IN YONKERS" has Jay and Arty, teenagers who have been told they must move in with Grandma (Loraine Shields) so their father, Eddie (Patrick Burke), can go find work to pay off a loan shark. Jay (Bennett Saltzman) is the bold, older brother to Arty (Brent Anthony/Ethan Rockwell). Grandma is that stern, German grandmother who is emphatic that she doesn’t want her grandsons moving in with her. Enter Eddie’s sister Bella (Roslyn Cohn). Bella is happy, kind, spirited and simple-minded. And Bella is the one who brings this wacky, yet very normal family together. Louie (Van Boudreaux), is Eddie’s mobster brother, and Gert (Julie Davis), their sister who brings a bit of normality to the family, or maybe not. Don’t we all have families with wacky relatives? That’s what makes families normal.
The cast’s performances are amazing.
Roslyn Cohn is outstanding!!! Loraine Shields is outstanding!!! Bennett Saltzman is a newcomer to the Group Rep and outstanding, and hopefully, we will be seeing more of him. Patrick Burke, Van Boudreaux, Julie Davis and Brent Anthony (who was in the opening) are all fantastic. As usual, GRT has great sets by Chris Winfield, great costumes by Angela M. Eads, great lighting and sound. Everything about this play is wonderful.
I thoroughly enjoyed this play. In fact, I loved it!!! I laughed, I cried. It left me wanting more. We are so fortunate we have such wonderful theatre in North Hollywood. "LOST IN YONKERS" is a MUST see.
