The Actors Workout Studio is a mine of talent and creativity and this latest offering is just as good as ever.
"Elvis is in The Building" is a selection of dramatized, anecdotal, micro plays all based around the ‘Elvis’ theme, with a little bit of music thrown in.
With stories as varied as a young girl who falls for a young Elvis as they sing together in church, to a much older woman reminiscing about her first ever kiss with The King in a hotel room closet as they hide from rabid fans while she interviews him for her college newspaper. The story of a couple breaking up because the husband just couldn't bring himself to stop being an Elvis impersonator and get a real job was a particular one that stand out for me. But really, every single story and all the wonderful songs in between them, led by a rather enigmatic ‘Elvisian’ guitarist, all hip swaying and quiff flicking, is a wonderful Americana narrative on the impact one man from Mississippi had on the world.
In such fragile times as these, all these fascinating and compelling moments brought together by actors eager to share their love is a truly worthwhile way to spend an evening. If you’re an Elvis fan or not, the passion that he roused, in one way or another, can only be interpreted as magical, life affirming and up lifting.
These enthusiastic writers and actors remind us that fantasy is worth every red cent and that some people are just born to greatness.
The spirit with which these plays are performed is pure and full of fun, it really does go to the very heart of why some perform, some watch and some get to write about them both.
Don’t we all need a little bit of Elvis in our life?
