CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF
By Tennessee Williams
Directed by L. Flint Esquerra
The Group Rep at the Lonny Chapman Theatre in North Hollywood opens its 42nd season with the amazing Tennessee Williams play, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, directed by L. Flint Esquerra. Set on a Mississippi plantation in the 1950s, a Southern family gathers to celebrate the patriarch of the family’s 65th birthday, who they believe to be dying.
Maggie (Madeline Fair) is the ambitious but lonely wife of Brick (Daniel Kaemon), Big Daddy’s (Kent Butler) “favorite” son. But Brick, an ex-football all-star, is passive to Maggie’s every advance, internalizing his emotion and drinking himself into oblivion over the suicide of his friend, Skipper. Liquor seems to be Brick’s only friend. Known as Maggie the Cat, she tries every hot and steamy technique to entice Brick, but Brick is locked in his own angry thoughts, and denies Maggie’s every advance.
Big Daddy, the loud, abusive husband to dedicated Big Mama (Diane Frank) is depicted as what we think the typical plantation owner would be, egotistical and overbearing. Of course, there is the less favored son, Gooper (Todd Andrew Ball), and his striving wife, Mae (Kyra Schwartz) who have 4 children with one on the way. They know Big Daddy favors Brick, and they want to be sure they inherit a good portion of Big Daddy’s fortune. We round out the cast with Reverend Tooker (Scott Dewey/Steve Shaw), Dr. Baugh (Bruce Nehlsen), Sookie (Felicia Taylor E.), and the children, Dixie (Mia Banham), Buster (Jacob Accarado), Sonny (Andrew C. Grigorian) and Trixie (Lily Daugherty), each one an asset to the play.
L. Flint Esquerra’s wonderful direction gives passion to each character, and Chris Winfield’s set is fantastic. Costumes, lighting, and sound all contribute to a production worth seeing.
If this production in the Group Rep’s 42nd season opener is any indication of what is to come, we are in for an excellent season. CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF is a winner, yall!
