the Group Rep at the Lonny Chapman Theatre presents

Written by Edward Albee
Directed and Produced by Alyson York

For those of you familiar with Edward Albee’s work, you will know that he won critical acclaim and a Tony for his most famous work Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

The 41st season at the Group Rep at the Lonny Chapman Theatre presents his play THE AMERICAN DREAM, described by Albee himself as “an attack on the substitution of artificial for real values in our society”. This clever, sometimes brash, yet gripping satire cuts to the chase on the absurdity of the human condition, dysfunctionality in our society, and more importantly in the American family. We want “satisfaction”, we want to know we have what we want. We want to believe that we should have what we deserve. And we want everyone else to know that we deserve it.

This is not just the view of how Albee perceives American society, it is a fast paced theatrical event filled with laughs.

American Dream

The laughs are many, but they also make us aware about how silly and ridiculous our daily lives have become. There are good performances by everyone in the cast. Linda Alznauer as Mommy, Michael Robb as Daddy, Renee Gorsey as Grandma, Christina Carson as Mrs. Barker, and Andre Jack as Young Man.

Alyson York has directed this cast with distinction giving us Albee’s intent behind this play. Good job to all of you.

Edward Albee wrote this play prior to “Virginia Woolf”. It is satire, and it is funny, and opens our eyes to the absurdity of THE AMERICAN DREAM. Sometimes we feel uneasy, but at the end of the play we agree with Grandma. You will know what I mean when you reserve tickets to this fun and different play.
