THE ROAD THEATRE COMPANY and Taylor Gilbert, Founder/Artistic Director together with Sam Anderson, Artistic Director and the play's director presented the World Premiere of THE DIFFERENT SHADES OF HUGH, written by Clete Keith. THE DIFFERENT SHADES OF HUGH is a thought provoking play that explores the very personal world of an artist's creative process and how that fits within societal norms. "This show is a piece of art about a piece of art and is loaded with all kinds of surprises," charmingly stated by Director Sam Anderson. This is one review, I can't give too much information about the story because what keeps you spell bound and glued to every scene is the continuing winding road of mystery and intrigue.
Clete Keith has written an extraordinary play that you won't see everyday. Only an experienced and talented playwright could do this. Sam Anderson seamlessly directed a complicated play that will stay in your mind for days. Although, most people know Sam Anderson from 35 years of performances in TV, film and stage, this show is a good reminder of his great talents as a director. The cast features: Coronado Romero plays the artist Hugh with great skill and was able to reflect the chaotic and beautiful layers of a creative mind. Whitney Dylan plays Hugh's former girlfriend Diane who beautifully portrays society's views of creativity. Ellie Jameson is Maris, tenderly playing Hugh's one chance at unconditional love. Two of my favorite characters were Paul played by Tom Musgrave and Paul's friend played by Zachary Mooren. They excelled at fast pace comedy and wit.
The audience was moved through a roller coaster of emotions and, for this to happen, every facet of the play must be working on all cylinders. This show does just that. Applauds to the award-winning design team: Adam Flemming/Scenic and Projection Design, Jeremy Pivnick for Lighting Design, Jocelyn Hublau for great costumes and sound design by David Marling. Thanks to Road Theatre Company and its producers, Craig Berenson, Suzanne Hunt and Bettina Zacar for having the insight and courage to do this great play.
