Written by Donald Margulies
Directed by Sherry Netherland
Produced by Alex Parker for the Group Rep

COLLECTED STORIES is the newest offering from the Group Rep at the Lonny Chapman Theatre in North Hollywood. Donald Margulies has written a wonderful two-character play set in a character-filled Greenwich Village apartment.

Ruth (performed by talented actor Julia Silverman) has been a prominent short-story writer, and now teaches aspiring young writers. Lisa, (played by the wonderful Liza de Weerd) is a student of Ruth’s, and has heard that she is looking for an assistant. She convinces Ruth that she is perfect for the job, becomes her protégé and over time friendship and trust develops. Lisa looks for approval, but Ruth only seems to take pride in being difficult. Eventually, Ruth confides in Lisa, telling her about her love affair with a much older man and the pain she still suffers from that relationship. Julia Silverman and Liza de Weerd are superb as teacher and student, capturing professional jealousy, ethics, morality, betrayal and human vulnerability dividing these two strong characters.

Donald Margulies’ COLLECTED STORIES is a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and along with Sherry Netherland’s direction provides crisp, delightful dialogue for the wonderful actors to sink their teeth into. Chris Winfield has created the ultimate writers apartment, both cluttered and full of creativity.

There is so much more to this story. It is full of great moments, and after seeing COLLECTED STORIES I’m still thinking about how I would have felt if I had been Ruth. How do we feel when someone takes something SO personal and shares it with the world, violating your trust? When you see this play, you will have that same question. Come out and see another great evening at the Group Rep at the Lonny Chapman Theatre in the NoHo Arts District.
